| December 19, 2008 - Wow, the snow just
won’t stop falling! What the heck was I thinking? After living here in
northern Michigan for over 30 years the cold winters must have numbed my
brain. Just now, sitting by a blazing fire in our stone fireplace the
gray matter begin to sizzle and I had a rare moment of clarity. I’ve been
shoveling, plowing and blowing snow out of our drive more times that I
want to count – although I did figure out that in the past three weeks I
have blown out the drive at least nine times! Now I realize I should have
been doing the reverse, blowing the snow around the driveway into the
drive! In no time at all I will have a huge mound of snow, I mean really
huge (think Mt. Lawrence.) I’ll open it up for climbing, skiing and maybe
snowshoeing around the base. I’ve still got to locate some Sherpa guides
in the area and find a good source for small oxygen bottles as it’s going
to be a long way to the top of heap! December 29, 2008 - This has certainly been a strange month for weather, even for Michigan. I heard that our county has already received 90% of our normal snowfall for winter. After that report, we had at least another 12" of snow. After some cold temperatures with highs in the low teens, two days ago it was 47 here with lots of hard rain. Now everything is frozen and covered with fresh snow. I had to shovel part of my roof and the snow was about 24" deep. It's been tough for the wildlife and I can see that many of them are hungry and searching hard for food. Right now there are 16 turkeys out by my garage pecking around the cleared areas. The one bedraggled hen that I saw several months ago is with the group and that was a surprise to me. The big bird feeder is empty now and needs to be refilled. I'll try to get that done today before the predicted winds and snow kick back up. |
