| July 4, 2008 - I was sitting at the
computer this morning about 10 a.m. when Sue walked into the studio to
talk to me. "There's a bear!" I heard her exclaim. Right
outside the window was a black bear and as we watched it stood up by the
bird feeder and sniffed the feeding platform. The feeder was empty
and the bear moved on toward the side of the house. I grabbed a
camera and went to the back door. The bear was sniffing around and
the moved off toward the driveway. I carefully opened the main door
so I could shoot pictures through the screen. Just as I was getting
the camera up to my face the bear crossed in front of the door about 2-3'
from me. The camera was running on video mode but the bear was so
close the video shows a big furry shape passing by. I couldn't keep
quiet and as it passed by I whispered "Hey there big guy." The bear
changed gears and loped off around the tree by the feeder and around the
group of spruce trees in the back yard. I had stepped outside to
film it from the porch and it stopped to look at me and then walked off
across the yard and behind the storage building. I decided to get
some more photos, so I started off toward the building. I couldn't
decide rather to follow it, or circle around the building and head the
bear off. I decided to climb the stack of wood palettes that would put me on
top of the building itself. I quickly and quietly climbed up on the
roof but I couldn't locate the bear. I heard Sue in the house say
"trailer" and then I heard the bear over by the house trailer just off the
back yard. I never saw it again and figure it must have dropped over
the bank and back into the cedar swamp. It's not uncommon for us to
see bears in the spring and fall, but it is rare to see them in broad
daylight!
