March 3, 2011 – It was six degrees outside this morning with a slight breeze just to make me feel a little colder. We still have about a foot of snow on the level and more in the swamp. Three deer were in the backyard yesterday afternoon when Sue pulled in from school. There isn't much wildlife activity visible around here, but that will change this month as the weather warms, the turkeys start strutting their stuff and some waterfowl like the wood ducks migrate back north and start looking for nesting sites. March 13, 2011 – I had some interesting wildlife observations yesterday and today. Yesterday I saw two red-tailed hawks that appeared to be mating. I happened to have my camera with me, but by the time I get it out and ready the only photos I took was after they flew off and one landed on a telephone pole. Still, it was a curious sight and something I have never seen before. Today I was painting at my drafting table that overlooks the creek and some movement caught my eye. Down in the creek were four deer, wading and browsing. I watched three of them stick their heads into the water and pull up vegetation that they ate. One, an obvious buck based on the growth starting on top of his head, would stick its head down a deep as its eye and beyond at times.
The coyotes have been active quite close to the studio in the past week. A few days ago we hear some strange cries down by the creek followed by the coyotes yipping and howling. This was not the scream like calls of a rabbit, but something different that I have not heard before. Last night I could hear them howling briefly and they sounded like they were down in the creek bottom. |
