November 22,2011 - No snow on the ground right now, but we have had two different storms that dumped 2" and 3" on us so far. While working on a website tonight the motion lights went off between the garage and the "turkey coop". There have been two cats hanging around here at night and I'm not sure if they are wild or not, but I hope they are catching mice. I thought one of the cats must have triggered the light, but I always get up to look. For an instant I thought it was a cat, but as the animal walked into the light I saw the fat tail - a grey fox! This is only the second time I have see a grey fox in the wild, so I thought it was pretty cool. November 29,2011 - Lately when I have been working on the computer in the studio, I think I see something moving on the floor over by my file cabinet on my right side. My peripheral vision seems to see a small dark shape moving across the carpet. Each time I turn that way to see what caught my attention I find it is only the edge of my glasses and nothing is there - until last night! I thought I saw something move (again) and turned to look. There was nothing there, as usual. A few seconds later I thought something moved on my right again and I did another quick look - actually a double take. There was a small squirrel sitting there! It looked ragged and something about it just didn't look right. It looked like a small red squirrel. I noticed some bumps of some sort across the stomach area, so I thought maybe a nursing red squirrel? At this time of the year? In the house? It ran across the studio, and not very fast and hid under the roll top desk, behind the waste basket. I'll spare the details but I did finally get it outside. Then I realized what the "bumps" were along the belly - they were folds of skin. It was a flying squirrel! Its coat was terrible, either it had mange, or it was wet and it was covered with dust and cobwebs (hey, it was in the corner of the studio behind some "stuff"). It was in places where only mice and squirrels go. Of course the big question in our minds is how did it get in the house! |
