The old building behind my home and studio we call the “turkey coop.”  After our log home was originally built in 1939, this building served as a place to raise turkeys for market.  Now it holds a collection of odds and ends, including some old horse harnesses.  I have seen the morning light shine through the small window panes and a warm shaft of light spill across the textures of old worn leather and their rusted metal parts.  For years I have wanted to put a bird in this setting and do a painting.  After a lot of small sketches and many compositional ideas, “Sunlight & Shadows” is the final results of my ideas.  It is one of my most favorite paintings.  I enjoyed every stroke while painting it and that’s a rare event in painting!  The bird is a white-throated sparrow.  There are many of them around my studio and I believe this one is not quite in full adult plumage.  I love their color pattern and have painted these birds several times.
