“Juncos are frequent visitors to my feeder during the winter months.  Despite not having much color I still find them very attractive and enjoy watching them.  They seem to primarily feed on the ground under the feeder, so it is a bit of a challenge to get some good reference photographs of them.  I have wanted to paint a junco for quite sometime and finally was able to get some good shots of them last winter.  The group of maple leaves in the painting actually hangs between my garage and dog kennels.  Usually the maple leaves all drop in the fall, but this particular branch always seems to hold leaves through the winter.  One winter, after a heavy snow, the temperatures began to warm and the snow began to thaw and then freeze, looking more like granular ice.  I took some photos and put them into my file of ideas.  When I decided to paint a junco, these leaves became a great place to have the junco perched.”
