| "Wolf Spirit" - Acrylic - by Rod Lawrence | |||
"This painting is based on some photographs and experiences that I had during several trips to Wyoming. The wolf is a combination of photos I took during a visit to the Grizzly Bear Discovery Center in West Yellowstone, Montana. The setting in the painting is just south of Dubois, Wyoming, down in Torry Canyon. Among the rock ridges are numerous Indian petroglyphs. Archaeologist believe the images were created by the Sheep Eaters, or Mountain Shoshone Indians of that area. These people raised and utilized large wolf-like dogs. The meaning of these images is still not clear. I took some artistic liberty and moved the petroglyphs I saw down the canyon and put them in this rock setting that was just a couple of miles away. I love the blue shadows and the yellow, warm light shafts that split the boulders and spill onto the rocks and grass."
